Have the Authentic Salem Experience

Samhain is drawing near, and Salem is at the peak of tourist season. I am so proud to descend from this city, but I’ve noticed how much the “Halloween in Salem” motif is romanticized. I love spooky season, but sometimes it feels like the authentic Salem experience gets lost in the crowded streets and packed restaurants. As someone who’s lived here for almost three months, here are my favorite ways to experience Salem.
Perusing Shops and Museums
Salem takes deep pride in its history — skipping the museums or historic homes would be downright sinful! My favorite is the Peabody Essex Museum (PEM), a haven for both history and art lovers. The Pickering House (once home to my 10th great-grandfather!) and the House of the Seven Gables are other wonderful stops that connect past and present.
Window shopping has become one of my favorite hobbies — and a true test of willpower. You could spend a whole weekend visiting every witchy, metaphysical, or alternative-themed shop and still not see them all.
In the downtown district, my top picks are Pentagram and Nocturne. Pentagram is perfect if you already know your magical style; their staff is knowledgeable and their psychic readings are fantastic. Nocturne is a must for anyone who loves a romantic goth aesthetic. They feature local artists and authors, and the shop itself is very cozy.
People Watching
If you’re trying not to spend money, spend an afternoon just people watching downtown. Salem is alive with street performers, people in costumes, and snippets of walking tours drifting through the air. Every corner offers a story. I’ll admit — I often head downtown just to feel the energy and see what is going on downtown.
Relax at the Wharf
I love Pickering Wharf! Bonus: There's more shops here! The Cauldron Black is a great all-around one stop witchy supplies shop. COVEN has awesome clothes for both men and women.
The wharf’s vibe is gentler than downtown. Instead of red bricks and bustling crowds, you’ll find salt air, seagulls, and a walkable lighthouse. Sometimes I just sit at one of the tables, listen to the waves, and breathe. After all, you can’t visit a coastal town and not visit the wharf.
Be Present
No matter how you choose to enjoy Salem, make sure you stay in the moment. The city is alive — not just with people, but with energy, memory, and spirit. Don’t rush through it. Let the land guide you.
